Farmers’ Knowledge, Attitudes, and Control Practices of Rodents in an Agricultural Area of Taiwan

Rodents threaten agricultural industries and food security on a global scale. Rodent management practices routinely involve the use of chemical products, mainly anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs). An understanding farmer rodent control behaviors is crucial in order to implement changes more environmentally friendly practices. In this study, we surveyed farmers an area northwestern Taiwan their knowledge, attitudes, for pests. From our survey sample 126 farmers, rodents were perceived be most problematic vegetable crops, followed by rice, then fruit. Farmers oldest age group those that cause extensive damage crops found have negative attitudes toward One-third stated they currently rodenticides, with crop type, problems caused rodents, important explanatory variables. Our results indicate reactive; are likely apply products if perceive damage. Additionally, cost–benefit assessments governing behaviors; may inclined subsidized government, which include ARs, when observe inflicted rodents. We also describe how ecologically based (EBRM) could feasible sustainable alternatives rodenticide use.
